FOR MBTI PRACTITIONERS ONLY
I was talking with some MBTI practitioners recently about type dynamics - how when I started using it, it opened up a new world of understanding about psychological type. How it turned my practice of type from interesting to wow. How it took my understanding of an instrument that many think of as one-dimensional to something with much greater depth.
The MBTI has been around so long, many people think they know all there is to know about it. Attending international type conferences opens up your eyes to how much more there is to type.
If all you're doing is working with the dichotomies (Extraversion-Introversion; Sensing-iNtuition; and so on), then you may be missing out on the depth and sophistication that the MBTI offers. If the last bit of professional development you did around type was your qualifying program, it could be time for you to refresh and upgrade your skills. This one-day workshop will refresh and re-excite you about all that type has to offer. The MBTI is such a multi-layered tool - come to the program to learn more.
If you're working with the MBTI and are still not sure if this program is for you, try these questions on for size:
- what is your own leading (dominant) function?
- what are the key characteristics of your leading function?
- what is your supporting function? How does it work to support your leading function?
- what are the leading functions for each of the other 15 types (apart from your own)?
- how can you use type dynamics to help someone ascertain their best fit type?
If you don't know the answer to any or all of those questions, this program is for you!
Dates:
Sydney - February 17, 2011 (TBC)
Location: Central/CBD location
Time: 9.30am - 4.00pm
Cost: $490 + GST per participant
Focus: What we'll cover is:
1/ understanding the leading and supporting functions for each of the 16 types
2/ a quick, easy and memorable way to remember the leading functions - the metaphors
3/ how type develops over time ('ages and stages')
4/ working with your own leading function - starting that journey
5/ helping someone ascertain best fit type using type dynamics
6/ using type dynamics to work with people who have "done" the MBTI many times before

Case Study:
I was working with a group of senior managers from a global accounting/advisory firm. One senior manager had self-reported ENTJ and his reported type (Step II) was ENTP. Many type practitioners would go directly to a discussion around J and P to help this person ascertain best fit type - they'd likely ask questions about how organised/not this person was; whether they did itineraries for vacations, list making, approaches to task/time - that sort of thing. Whilst not wrong, this isn't the best or most accurate way to help someone.
Confusion around ENTJ and ENTP is not really about J/P so much... it's more to do with the functions (N and T in this case). If a person is unsure about the attitudes (you know what they are, right?) then type dynamics is almost always the quickest and most accurate way to help them get to best fit type. If you don't know what the attitudes are, come along to this program and find out more (if you're working with type - this is stuff you really need to know).
What did I do? Using the metaphor cards for each of the 8 functions, I did a quick (60 second) exercise with this s/manager to see which leading function fit better for him - extraverted thinking (Te) or extraverted intuition (Ne). It was so easy for him to determine which fit best - snap! - he just knew. (the magic of quality resources helps a lot too - our metaphor cards are a great tool). ENTP was a much better fit for him - the qualities of Ne fit him almost to the letter, and Te wasn't right at all. All this without mentioning J or P and in rapid time. Type Dynamics gets to best fit very quickly and accurately.

Who's running this workshop?

I'm Jill Chivers and I'm designing and delivering these open workshops in 2010. I'm the only Australian ever to serve on the Board of the Association of Psychological Type International - the only professional association that guides the ethical use of type. I'm a Certified Professional Facilitator through the International Association of Facilitators, and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Professional Facilitators.
I qualified to use the MBTI in 2001 and have been using it consistently since then. For several years I delivered a 1.5day communication/leadership program for Australia's largest institutional bank. I didn't know about type dynamics then and only wish I had.
By 2006, I had started to work more with type dynamics - the first step was to understand more about my own. Knowing I'm an extravert is helpful - knowing that I extravert feeling is like tuning that knowledge into very sharp focus. Type dynamics takes broad knowledge and makes it incredibly useful - instead of it being "just information" it becomes a tool - something you can use.
A career highlight was designing and delivering a two-day leadership program based on the MBTI for senior managers and directors of one of the world's largest professional services firms. We ran this program, titled Leading with Insight, for 4 years until 2009 and it was consistently one of the most popular programs on a curriculum of over 90 courses, with many participants being encouraged to attend by previous attendees.
My own use of type has been inestimably expanded through collaboration/work with international type authors such as Katherine Hirsh, Damien Killen and Sharon Lebovitz Richmond - all CPP Type authors. You can read more about me by visiting here and here.
